Making Money Online – Legitimate At Home Method

Hello everyone, are you dreaming of the morning where you get out of bed, head into the kitchen where the coffeemaker is brewing your favourite brand of coffee or tea? You fill your cup and head into your home office, fire up the desktop computer, laptop or tablet. Or maybe you head into the Den, sit in your favourite chair with your laptop, tablet or mobile device on your lap, and that is how you would start every morning for the rest of your life. Depending on your qualifications, experience or passion it can become a reality.

Well, that is exactly how each morning begins for me. I either sit in my favourite chair in the Living Room or at the dining table with my cup of tea and start my online business. Whether you are a stay at home Mom/Dad, a student seeking extra money to help with tuition fees, a person between jobs or someone seeking to become their own boss, there are several legitimate businesses online that provide you with the opportunity to make your dream into reality.

My purpose here is to introduce you to a few of these businesses and also introduce you to the one that I eventually chose as my way to make some extra money online to augment my retirement pension. I call it “crazy money.” That is money I use to do the things on my bucket list without dipping into my pension.

What I would like to do is introduce you to the following six most popular online businesses that depending on how much money you would like to earn you can use to achieve your financial goals.

This is the latest way that people can purchase, mine or trade in online currency. Started in 2009, Bitcoin was the

first Cryptocurrency by either an individual in Japan, named Satoshi Nakamoto or a group of four individuals. The United States of America’s National Security Agency (NSA) with its advantage of supercomputers believe they have narrowed down the identity to one individual, by gathering and evaluating millions of internet articles and emails.

Confirmation is still not absolute but other individuals have suggested that Mr. Satoshi Nakamoto is that individual or the pseudonym for the group. No one is sure, but as of the end of 2017, that person or group is estimated to be worth seven billion.

Since 2009, more currencies have popped up but the top three are Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. Cryptocurrency is used over the internet by people all over the world. It does not operate within the normal banking and government fiscal policies and laws, but it is not illegal. At the end of 2017, the cryptocurrency market was worth approximately $600 billion. The downside to cryptocurrency is it can be volatile in terms of value. May 2017, the value of bitcoins fell 19% and three billion dollars were wiped off the value and that was in one day. On the other hand, you can see it increase by 250%.

As stated earlier there are three ways to make money with cryptocurrency, trading, mining and selling items on the internet and holding on to the currency. I believe the easiest way for you to make money with cryptocurrency is trading. It is similar to trading stocks, and the general rule on the stock market is to “buy low, sell high.” The neat thing about this currency is that you do not have to purchase the whole coin.

To begin you will need to set up a wallet and there are companies on the internet that provide that service, such as Coinbase. Like other businesses on the internet you will need to verify legitimacy, there are lots of scammers out there.

Similar to the stock market, you have to do your research on the type of coin you are going to trade. Find information on how to trade, and monitor what is going on daily. So if you have a couple hundred dollars that you can invest, then trading in cryptocurrency is the way to go.

Interacting with individuals from the age of four to 80 through teaching can be rewarding both emotionally and financially. The beauty of the internet is there are opportunities to do just that and never leave your home. There are various teaching opportunities online to choose from. From tutoring at the college and university level, Kindergarten to grade 12, or distance learning for adults, English tutoring online or preparing lessons for business organizations.

Should you decide to teach at the college, university, elementary or high school levels you will require at least a bachelor’s degree. A master’s to teach at the college and university levels or preparing courses for business companies. What you decide to teach is really up to you. Again do your homework, not all the companies out there pay a reasonable rate.

Top companies that offer a wide range of teaching positions are:

  • Udemy
  • Coursera
  • Skillshare

There are several others, but these are the three that are featured in Forbes, the Huffington Post, and other business journals.

Popular teaching subjects are science, mathematics, and English or any language for that matter. English is now considered the language of business. I recall the last time I was in Japan, a place called Kumamoto, businessmen and university students would approach me on the street, in restaurants or bars and offer to buy me drinks if I would speak with them. Their objective, of course, was to practice their English, not to get me drunk.

Teaching languages from the comfort of your home is always a good opportunity to meet people from around the world. The good online companies tend to pay between $15 to 25 an hour and the average time with each student is between 30 minutes to one hour.

Where do you start? There are several companies online that are considered good. It just depends on what you are seeking. Three companies that come highly recommended are:

    • Cambly
    • TutorABC
    • VIPKID

Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is a great way to generate an income online or through contracts with hard copy magazines and companies. The benefits of working virtually, of course, are:

  • is the flexibility of working from home or from anywhere,
  • the number of assignments you accept,
  • choosing the hours that you work.

I have two friends that make their living by being freelance. One is a Photograph Journalist, the other an Editor/Journalist. Both left careers with international and national magazines in Canada and the United States, seeking the freedom and flexibility freelance writing provides.

One approach is to freelance blog. This is being a guest blogger for other bloggers, online business entrepreneurs that are seeking people that can write content for their websites. The other approach is like my friends, you go through an agency that specializes in writing assignments. Depending on your qualifications and experience you can make a comfortable income.

Before starting my online business, I tried to make money through completing online surveys. I joined several online survey companies and received regular surveys every day, my problem with this was the remuneration I received for completing each survey. When it was cash it was small. Some companies only provided credits for your time. After a few months, I realized that I would never create the type of “crazy money,” I was seeking, and it would take a lifetime. So I decided to look for something more challenging and rewarding.

There are companies that claim that you can make up to $200 per survey, but I cannot verify that claim.

Electronic Commerce

Electronic Commerce or E-Commerce is buying and selling products over the internet. Companies like Amazon, eBay, Shopify and a few others partner with you to sell their products.  You can also sell your own products.

The first thing you will require is a website. Website hosters like WordPress or GoDaddy, provide e-commerce themes you can use to create your e-commerce store. You will have established a way to collect payments. Pay Pal or Google Wallet are two popular ways to manage and collect payments.

Where this gets complicated is if you are selling physical merchandise and where you will store the items. Arrangements will have to be made with shipping companies like FedEx, and UPS. The alternative is what is called “drop shipping.” There are companies like Amazon or Shopify who store, process and ship the items. These companies will act on your behalf and in so doing will use your brand and packaging.

From what I understand from individuals that have created stores online, in the beginning. It is not so time-consuming, but as the business gets rolling, it can become quite time-consuming, especially around the holidays.

Affiliate Marketing

What I like about Affiliate Marketing is it combines several of the opportunities for making money that I mentioned above and it is how I have decided you earn my “crazy money.”

After researching the various ways of making money online, I decided that affiliate marketing gave me the breadth and depth needed to establish my business as an authority in the area that I have a passion.

Like freelance writing, I can operate my business from where ever my bucket list takes me, and in 2017, I did my business on the plane to Jamaica where I spent two months. Every morning I would wake up grab my tea, sit out on the veranda and start my day working on my website, respond to email and research the new posts that I would publish that week.

On deciding to try affiliate marketing I recommend you do your homework. There are a lot of “get rich schemes online that promise you the world. Avoid these companies, they will empty your wallet but you will not see any return on your investment. The company I found through my research, is Wealthy Affiliate (WA). It is a company created by two Canadians in western Canada who created WA based on their experience online. What attracted me to WA was I was allowed to try it for free. Yes, you heard me right. I could try the program for free and at the end, if I chose not to continue with them I got to keep the website I created.

In brief affiliate marketing is where you create a website based on a passion you would like to provide information or assistance through posts you develop on a regular basis. You earn money through affiliate programs, like Amazon or programs associated with your passion, advertising on your site and when people click on the advertising banner and purchase an item, you will receive an income. That commission can be anywhere from 1% to 50% depending on the company and the items they are selling.

To maximize your income you will have to again do your research on which affiliate programs provide good commissions.

I hope this has been informative. There are quite a few online businesses in which you can start the next phase of the rest of your life. I chose six that I would recommend, but if these are not your passion, by all means, continue to search. The one that captured my interest and has lived up to the promises made during the trial period is Wealthy Affiliate.

Hello, I am Harvey the creator of My Living The Dream. I was born on the beautiful island of Jamaica but grew up in the United Kingdom. With my family I immigrated to Canada and settled in Ottawa, Ontario. The capital of Canada. I am retired and I want to travel and enjoy my retirement. Get out of the cold and take vacations somewhere warm and low key. That is why I started this website. I figured if I can earn sufficient “crazy money,” that would allow me to travel five months of the year my dream can come true. I want to show you how you can turn your dreams into reality.

Hi Harvey, This is a VERY interesting article. You know, I’m amazed how there are always new things to learn when it comes to making money online. For instance, I had no idea that you could teach languages online. Also, the affiliate marketing sounds good to me. I’ve done the e-commerce route, mainly eBay. And it works but you sure have to work hard for you money selling on eBay.

Thank you Susan for dropping by my website and leaving a comment. There are of course several other legitimate ways of making money online. The problem is that you need a second lifetime to make sufficient funds or work eight hours 24/7. An example of this is responding to surveys, which I did. What I noticed was the maximum I was credited, and some of these companies are well known, was $3.00. Now you really have to ask yourself what is your time worth.
Never tried e-Commerce, looked complicated. Although Shopify has been trying to get me to start an online store. I think I will stick with Affiliate Marketing for now.

    Hey, Harvey:

Thanks for the round-up of interesting-sounding online businesses. As you say, there are many ways to make money online and it is a lot of fun to see what other folks are doing out there. It is also a help to know what does NOT work.

I also opted for Wealthy Affiliates, but mostly I find I am using it as a training ground for myself. I’ve been most impressed with the wealth of information presented and the number of people who are willing to lend a helping hand and give a kind word to fellow members.

I’m working on crafting a lifestyle blog and learning more about things like email marketing and esoterica like seo optimization and all that. I’ve come a long way, and probably still have a bunch to go yet.

    Good fortune on your journey….

Hello Netta, thank you for the comment. Your comments must be about the post you reviewed and not about what Wealthy Affiliate is about.  Thanks for dropping by.

Thanks Harvey for a great post.

Being able to wake up and go straight to your kitchen and then your home office or lounge is definitely a reality for a lot of people. Unfortunately, information overload is common as this is a very popular topic on the internet right now.

I have had my fair share of experiences with buying and selling cryptocurrencies however, as you mentioned the market is extremely volatile and therefore makes it difficult.

Heard a lot of amazing things with wealthy affiliate, It’s a great place for new people to start with all the information accessible in one place 🙂

Thank you Cem for your feedback. I am not surprised that currently, it is a hot topic on the internet. When you look at the number of Baby Boomers close to retirement or the number of Millenials who do not want to work for anyone, you realise there is a huge market out there for creating an online business. That is where Living The Dream comes in. Not only is it a safe environment to grow and learn, but it is free to start.

    Hi there!

I just finished reading your article about legit ways to make money online and I just had to drop you a quick comment to offer my thoughts on the subject.

I have been looking into Cryptocurrency trading and mining for quite a while now. Although I haven’t took the plunge and parted with any money yet. I’m sure there are totally legit methods of making money online with Cryptocurrency, but the more I look into it, the more concerned I become. It would seem that there are lots of scams out there!

Affiliate marketing is a method that I am very familiar with, but just like cryptocurrencies, there are loads of scams out there waiting for those willing to take a chance.

Fortunately I found a decent training platform a few years ago and then joined Wealthy Affiliate as you recommend in this article.

I would certainly vouch for the training at Wealthy Affiliate but what do you recommend with regards to Cryptocurrency trading?

    • Harvey Brown - Reply

Hello Andrew, thank you for your feedback and sharing of your experience. Yes there are a number of scams in the marketing or investing fields. You have to do your home work, like both you and I did to find Legitimate at Home Methods. My only suggestion to anyone thinking of going into Crptocurrency, is to know the type of investor you are. If you are willing to take risk then you can give it a go, but get training before jumping in. If you are a medium risk taker then think seriously before jumping. Low risk takers should not go in because of the high volatility.
