Have you ever said to yourself that when you retire you will start a business of your own?
Some of you perhaps are in your 30s to early 40s and are tired of the nine to five rat race and dream about leaving it all behind and seeing the world.
Maybe you have been laid off from a company after being loyal for 20 plus years, and need to generate an income to support your family.
These are all legitimate reasons to take a look at the internet to see if there are any online jobs you can do to generate an income, (supplementary or primary), or opportunities to start a business.
Why have you hesitated? Could it be that you have tried before and got scammed a few times so now you are skeptical when you read anything that suggest you can actually make good money online? I understand your skepticism, I was in the same frame of mind after a few scams that I swallowed hook, line and sinker.
Fortunately, my stubbornness, I like to call it my persistence, finally paid off this time. You see, I still believed that there had to be a legitimate organization online that could show me how to start a business where I could generate a passive income. I definitely did not want to work for anyone anymore and make them rich. I also had no intentions of getting back into the nine to five rat race. Been there, done that and bought the T-shirt.
What is passive income? It is money I am generating by attracting traffic/visitors to my online business who convert into customers and purchase items from t merchants who advertise on my website. From each sale I receive a commission and this is accomplished while I sleep or while I am on vacation.
While searching for a legitimate online marketing company I found that most businesses online that have the photo of the individual with the luxury mansion or car, tended to be scams. Not all but a good majority. I had one call me the other day promising that he could show me how to make $1,000 or more a month. I have to say he was persistent, even when I told him I already have a business online that did not cost me anything to start, he still persisted. After the Umpteenth time, I firmly said I was not interested. Before he finally hung up, he had to have the last words and his parting words were “stay with your broke a**.” I would have been definitely broke a** had I fallen for his pitch.
I eventually did find a company online that not only promised to teach me how to create a Search Engine Marketing (SEM) company. They also promised to provide the tools necessary to:
- create a website,
- establish my brand and me as an authority on my niche.
- Train me to become an Internet Marketer
- Access to 24/7, 365 answers and help
- Community of 1,000,000, who want to help me be successful
The surprise was when that company, Wealthy Affiliate, offered to do this for free. What! A company that wanted to prove itself before asking for my credit card. Never heard of.
Now we all know nothing in this life is for free and the telemarketer I spoke with made sure he pointed this our. Bob Dylan once wrote a song “Gotta Serve Somebody,” and he is so right. Somewhere down the line you will have to pay.
In any start up business there will be an initial cost, but if it is over a $1,000, to start creating you business online, run for the hills. Wealthy Affiliate however was willing to put its reputation on the line and offer a free start up.
I realize I cannot remove your skepticism, but after reading this article if I have created a little curiosity, and you research the opportunity of creating your own online business, then I have achieved my objective. The business I am suggesting is called Affiliate Marketing and it relies on search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo to generate traffic to your business. The objective once the traffic is on your website is to get that traffic to convert into consumers who buy from the merchants advertising on your site. Let us take a look at five good reasons why you should consider starting an affiliate marketing business.
Cheap to Start
Remember I told you I did find a company that said all the right things, especially training me on how to start my journey online. I became skeptical when they offered it all for free, but I was curious. I clicked on the button and found that the first ten days were free, and in those ten days your are given:
- Access to ten free lessons that take you through the process of getting started and how to generate an income.
- Two free websites as a Starter that you get to keep forever
- Access to a community of 1,000,000 plus including the founders of Wealthy Affiliate willing to mentor you, chat with you, answer any questions you may have and assist you.
All that, and for free. I was still skeptical, but willing to give it a try.
Most information that I have read says it costs you between $500 to $1,000 to start an online business. Some not so ethical companies out there will start off charging $500, but that can quickly grow to $6,000. There is a constant ”upsell,” in their marketing strategy and you never hear or see the word “Free.”
Wealthy Affiliate offers you two choices. The first is as a Starter. That is for free and after the initial ten days should you decide you want to continue with the free program, you can. You will continue to own the two websites that you build on Wealthy Affiiate’s free domain .siterubix.com domain.
The second offer is to become a Premium member. Most people I have met, after taking the first three to four lessons, became Premium members within two days of starting. As a Premium member you can:
- Build and host up to 25 free websites on the .siterubix.com domain and another 25 on your own domain, a total of 50 websites.
- Access to over 3,000 website themes and designs
- Access to the remaining four levels of the Certification Courses.
- 24 hour access to Site Support, seven days a week all year
- Live Chat, coaching or mentoring with members of the community including the founders
- Free tools that will facilitate the creation and development of your business (e.g. Jaaxy and Site Content).
- Live and video continuous training
- Possibility of earning extra income by creating video training, text tutorials and courses, referrals and so much more.
The cost to be a Premium member is $19 for the first month and $39 each following month.
In the introduction I mentioned a couple of scenarios and asked a couple of questions about the reasons to start your own business or leaving the nine to five rat race. One of the benefits of doing any of those things is the independence that you create for yourself. Imagine being your own boss. Not having to ever again answer to anyone as to the type of work you perform, when you do work or where you perform your work from.
The only person you will have to answer is yourself, or you partner. As long as you can access the internet you are in business and can manage it from anywhere in the world. You are the captain of your destiny, and the proud owner of your own affiliate marketing business. You are now responsible for all the decisions made to ensure it is successful.
Whether you are someone retired who needs to generate a supplementary income, a student that needs to support them self while away at college or university, or someone laid off that needs to create an income to support their family, starting an online affiliate marketing business is a good way to start.
How much you make will be based on the amount of time you are willing to invest in creating your business. You will not make a six figure income overnight. As I stated earlier, be weary of the companies, whether online or through telemarketing that promise you to generate an income that sounds too good to be true. If it sounds too good, believe me, it is not true and it will cost you to learn that lesson.
To make a good income from affiliate marketing you have to work at developing an attractive website, work with social media to get your business known and spend time writing quality content and publishing two to three times a week at minimum.
For your efforts you can start to earn anywhere from $100 to $1000 per month. The more you increase the content on your site the potential growth of your income also increases. An example of this are the two founders of Wealthy Affiliate. Kyle and Carson. They started with a business that provided access to a database of keywords by becoming a member to their site. That was back in 2005. Based on their success and investment of time, they realized that they could expand their business and create a website company that taught people how to be successful.
Both these men are millionaires today. The crazy thing is I have never seen or heard them brag about their financial status. The only evidence that they are making good change is the annual trip to Los Vegas they offer super affiliate members, all expenses paid.
I certainly would not promise you that you will achieve the status of a millionaire, but depending on your personal goal, the potential is there to generate sufficient income to work at your online business full time.
Your Choice of to Sell or Not to Sell
One of my favourite poems is my a poet Robert Frost. The poem is titled “The Road Not Taken,” and like the person in the poem, we always have choices to make. In affiliate marketing you have the choice of selling items from your affiliate programs (Amazon, Shopify) or your own items (e books, household decor). The other choice is to provide information or a service that internet searchers are seeking.
As you can see, my personal choice was to go with providing information or a service. I had visions of needing a place to store products if it was my own products or using a service called “drop shipping.” Being a person that wants to travel selling things online in my view could restrict me.
Providing information or access to services seemed much easier and less time-consuming especially around the major holidays.
Retail Increasing on the Internet
World-wide the use of tablets and smartphones to search out places to eat, destinations to vacation, direction and s.hop has exploded. Traditional brick and mortar stores that have not kept up with the trend and included digital marketing in the marketing plan are closing left right and centre. Currently in North America alone, 80% of those that have a tablet or smartphone are embracing online mobility.
In 1986, I remember Victor, my brother telling me of his experience in a restaurant in Hong Kong. He said the din from the number of people in the restaurant was one thing, but what struck him at the time was that everyone had a cellphone and because of the din, when a phone rang, everyone was checking to see if it was there’s. Today it is even worse, with the increase of smartphones on the market. Everyone, from Baby Boomers to Generation Z have embraced mobile technology. This romance with mobile technology provides great possibilities for your online business.
You can streamline your marketing strategy to target specific audiences. You can use social media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat) to advertise your business, attract more visitors to your website, and increase the possibility of sales.
The fun part of all this is you can do this from anywhere, so long as you have access to the internet.
There you have it folks, four reasons to start an online business. The one I am recommending is affiliate marketing, it is one of the fastest growing business for both merchants and marketers and the community I strongly suggest you give a try is Wealthy Affiliate. The benefits and knowledge you receive in the first ten days is worth the effort. With two free websites you can start working on a niche or passion that you want to share on the World Wide Web.
So what are you waiting for?
